Uptown Shopping
in Trinty Royal
Two
major retailers who are situated just around the corner from each
other in uptown Saint John are celebrating major milestones in their
businesses this year. This will be the 150th anniversary for Hayward
and Warwick and the 100th anniversary for Bustin's. Both businesses
are still owned and operated by descendants of the original owners.
HAYWARD AND WARWICK operates four retail stores.
Three of them - WH Hayward Co., Tackles and Simply Cottage are at
Market Square. Established in 1855, the parent company Hayward and
Warwick, is located in a brick heritage building at 85 Princess
Street. Mark and David Hayward are the fifth generation of owners
carrying on their family tradition and therefore, making this the
oldest family-owned retail business in Saint John. Hayward and Warwick
sells items in a broad range from the inexpensive to the more expensive
in fine china. They also have a wide range of collectibles which
come from all over the world, including Royal Doulton dinnerware,
as well as figurines; Balleek Parian china and Waterford crystal
from Ireland; Emile Henri bakeware from France and Mikasa crystal.
There is also a china museum at this location which has examples
of items used in this business from its beginnings up to the present
day.
BUSTIN'S
FINE FURNITURE LTD. opened on May 5, 1905 under the name
Bustins and Withers. Sam Withers was a teamster and kept his team
of horses at the foot of King. They started at 99 Germain Street
and are still at that location. Now they have three floors but when
they began they had half the first floor, a warehouse on the second
floor and a workshop on the top floor. The building where they are
located was built following the Great Fire in 1877. Charles L. Bustin
was the founder of the store. Tom and Bob Bustin are now the fourth
generation. They sell furniture, rugs, bedding and accessories and
offer quality and service.
Both businesses are planning special celebrations throughout this
year.
